Guernsey Disability Alliance: Disability Strategy report a 'sobering reality check'

Guernsey Disability Alliance has told ITV News the recent update report on the Disability Strategy is a 'sobering reality check' for politicians.

The project is facing even more delays, with the report repeatedly highlighting a lack of staffing resources.

The report was debated today where the Chief Minister called it a 'big wake up call', according to the Chair of the Guernsey Disability Alliance.

Shelaine Green said it was a wake up call not just for disability laws but for social policy in general.

Chief Minister admits he wants to be further ahead with Disability Strategy

Guernsey's Chief Minister has said the States would have liked to have been further ahead with the progress of the Disability Strategy.

The plan was passed in 2013 but it has faced numerous delays.

It's now looking like it might not be put into place until November 2016.

But Senator Jonathan Le Tocq said he would not be 'downbeat' adding that the strategy is a huge step for Guernsey.

A report was published yesterday that repeatedly mentioned lack of staff resources.

Disabled islanders in Guernsey are facing an even longer wait for the Disability Strategy to be implemented.

It was voted in by States members in November 2013 but it still might not come into play until November 2017.

An update report is being debated by politicians today; it repeatedly mentions a lack of staff resources.

Back in November 2013 we gathered to congratulate our deputies on passing the Disability and Inclusion Strategy. By contrast, two years on our States members are debating an Update Report that represents a sobering reality check, full of references to lack of staff resources. So, sadly, celebrations aren't really in order this time.
