A former Lieutenant Governor of Jersey has died.

Air Marshal Sir John Sutton was 84.

Air Marshal Sutton was the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey between 1990 and 1995, following a 39-year career in the Royal Air Force flying jet fighters such as Meteors, Canberra’s and Phantoms.

He retired from the RAF in 1989 as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief at RAF Support Command.

He was widely respected by those who worked with him during his tenure as Lieutenant Governor.

He will be remembered with affection by all who knew him.

He remained interested in Island affairs up until his death and was only recently visiting the Island and Government House in October this year. He is survived by his wife Angela (Lady Sutton) and three children.

I was very sorry to hear the sad news of Sir John’s death.

Air Marshal Sir John Sutton performed the role of Jersey’s Lieutenant Governor with skill and diplomacy, representing Her Majesty The Queen on ceremonial occasions and hosting many Royal, Ambassadorial and VIP visits.

I know Sir John retained a keen and informed interest in Island matters after his five-year term of office, and my thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
