More than half of the hedgehogs cared for by the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group in 2024 were not well enough to be released back into the wild, or died.

The charity recently posted on social media that they cared for 492 of the little garden animals last year.

Of that number, 258 died and 224 were released.

At the end of December 2024, 76 hedgehogs remain being cared for by the organisation with the majority at its headquarters at White Lodge.

Volunteers say the changeable weather has caused many of the hedgehogs to be confused meaning they aren't hibernating as normal, but aren't active either.

Many of those being cared for at the moment are still underweight and while it's wet, windy and cold they cannot be released.
