Around 50 homes were evacuated last night (Saturday 14 December) due to a gas leak on Le Squez Road in Le Clos Mourant, St Clement.

The Government moved residents to the Ambassador Hotel overnight "to avoid undue anxiety ".

They have now been allowed to return home after Island Energy confirmed this morning (Sunday 15 December), that there have been no readings of gas in the properties for four hours.

Engineers discovered a pocket of gas in a service duct, this has since been vented and the cause of the leak fixed.

They added that residual gas pockets have been purged with clean air and no longer pose a risk.

Residents were originally evacuated to the Good Companions Club before being moved to a hotel overnight.

Social housing provider Andium Homes said their properties at Le Clos Mourant do not have mains gas going into them.

The company said: "It is believed that the leak has occurred on a nearby Island Energy gas pipe situated beneath Le Squez Road, which passes by the apartment block."

"We are already speaking to Island Energy and others to understand how gas can have been detected in that area."

Island Energy apologised for the "distress and inconvenience caused".

It added: "We’ll be onsite to monitor gas levels over the next couple of days, and clear up will take longer."
