Alderney's most senior politician has resigned from the States and as Chair of the Policy and Finance Committee.

Nigel Vooght held the role for almost two years after being chosen to lead the committee in January 2023.

In his resignation letter, he said his attempts to implement changes were hindered by “political infighting” and that his relationship with the States' President has "irreparably broken down".

He said: "I entered the States two years ago in full awareness that there were tough decisions to be made, and at no stage have I ever expected to win a personality contest in helping to reach those decisions.

"My intention and motive were simply to get things done."

He added that Alderney has "so much potential" but claims the island won't achieve what it deserves as its politicians are "so divided and consistently attempt to belittle others who are trying their hardest."

He wished the States well but made a plea to its members to focus on external issues rather than fighting amongst themselves.

In response to the announcement, Alderney's Chief Executive Theo Leijser said: “Real progress has been made over the past year in reaching important decisions and taking steps to repair the political relationship with Guernsey.”

He added: “Mr Vooght has worked tirelessly to seek solutions to our Airport runway crisis and has proudly represented the island in top-flight delegations in Guernsey, the Bailiwick and further afield.”

A by-election to fill his role will be held in the New Year.
