Warhammer to be turned into film and TV series starring Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill has confirmed he's working to bring Warhammer to the big screen, just days after announcing he will not be returning as Superman.

The Jersey-born actor will reportedly both star in and produce a series, which will be part of a wider 'Warhammer Cinematic Universe'.

In a post on Instagram, he said he's spent 30 years dreaming of seeing the tabletop wargame franchise in "live-action".

On Friday 16 December, the maker of Warhammer - Games Workshop - announced it had agreed to a deal with Amazon to make films and TV programmes based on the games.

Cavill, who played Superman in the 2013 Man Of Steel film and again in 2016 for Batman vs Superman, addressed the new project in a statement on Instagram.

He said: “For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action.

"Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life.

“Partnering with Natalie Viscuso at Vertigo has been a blessing beyond words, without her we might not have found the perfect home at Amazon.

“And having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer.

“To all of you Warhammer fans out there, I promise to respect this IP that we love. I promise to bring you something familiar. And I endeavour to bring you something fantastic that is, as of yet, unseen.

“Our first steps are to find our Filmmaker/Creator/Writer. Watch this space, my friends. For The Emperor!"

Amazon will start holding talks with writers over the project, which will initially involve developing the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Games Workshop said.

Cavill’s return to the character of Superman was revealed less than two months ago in a post-credits scene of Dwayne Johnson’s anti-hero film Black Adam.

Earlier this week he said the reversal “isn’t the easiest” but that he respected the decision of newly instated DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.
