The Jersey Marathon has been cancelled, due to the coronavirus restrictions.

It was due to take place on Sunday 4 October, the same day that the London Marathon was rescheduled for before it was announced the UK race will be held virtually, except for elite runners.

Now due to Government of Jersey's update to COVID-19 restrictions the island event is unable to take place. Currently mass gatherings are limited to 40 people.

Organisers say they were hoping measures would be relaxed further and that the decision has been made "with great sadness" but that "the safety and welfare of our participants is our primary concern".

All registrations will be automatically transferred to the 2021 event and runners will receive more details in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, organisers say they are working on alternative ways for people to run the distance to try and make sure they are still able to fundraise in October.

With no cases of coronavirus and the borders still closed, Guernsey's Marathon is still set to go ahead on October 25.
