Calls to reopen Jersey's Broad Street to vehicles

There are calls for Broad Street in Jersey to be reopened to vehicles after being pedestrianised to allow for physical distancing. A petition has been submitted to the States saying the road is largely unused by pedestrians and is affecting retailers and shoppers.

It has been closed to vehicles since 23 May, to try and allow cafés to provide al fresco dining for customers. The decision also meant the bus stop had to be moved with the number five and 19 routes being diverted as well as disabled parking bays being relocated to Dumaresq Street.

According to Julie Chandlen, who has submitted the petition, cafés and restaurants are not using the road for al fresco seating. She also says people with disabilities, who would normally use the parking bays to go to the Post Office, are having to walk further.

For Jersey's Infrastructure Minister, Deputy Kevin Lewis, he originally agreed to close Broad Street with the aim of giving islanders enough space to walk through town.
