Decriminalising cannabis in Guernsey will be reviewed
A decision on whether to decriminalise cannabis in Guernsey has been delayed until 2022.
The law change was proposed as part of a wider debate on the justice system in the island.
Politicians voted yesterday (22 July) to delay that debate by 24 votes to 14, with one abstention.
The Home Affairs Committee will now have to return to the States by December 2022 with evidence-based proposals for reforming Guernsey's justice system - including a constructive review of the current system.
The Health and Social Care Committee meanwhile must present a Combined Substance Use Strategy as soon as possible.
Within six months of this being debated, both committees must then go back to the States with options for alternative approaches to the possession and use of small quantities of illegal drugs, which will not be limited to just cannabis.
