Guernsey basketball players get back on court to finish what they started
Skipton got the better of Le Mont Saint in men's division one as the last of Guernsey's basketball leagues returned to action following the enforced hiatus.
Having started their season back in October, the Guernsey Basketball Association decided not to scrap the campaign when coronavirus brought island sport to a halt and have now got their players back on court to contest the remaining fixtures.
"It's a bit strange playing in July to say we've normally finished by the end of April", said GBA fixtures secretary Peter Beausire.
"All the guys are eager to play, everyone's on the island, everyone's fit and healthy, so I think we've got some good competitive games to finish off our season".
"We made the decision as a committee that if we went into August we would scrap the season because it would run into the next one in September", said Beausire.
"But the fact we can finish all our games in July, have August off, then start pre-season in September, for us it's actually worked out really well".
Skipton's victory at Beau Sejour on Wednesday night keeps them in the title race, with the defending champions Mayside - who they meet on 24 July, the other side in the hunt.
In the women's division, Ravenscroft will be crowned champions if they beat Comets - who could also take the title if they win both of their remaining games - on 17 July.
Thirty matches were left on the schedule across the island's five leagues, with Skipton and Giants set to meet in the final game when the season comes to a close on 29 July.
