Food waste saving app launched in the Channel Islands
An app to cut food waste has been launched in the Channel Islands.
'Gander' as it is known, displays reduced-to-clear items in shops in real time by linking it to pricing technology used in stores. Customers can then see what items have been reduced on the mobile app.
They say that once an item has been sold, it is automatically removed from the app.
The company is currently rolling out the technology in 19 Morrisons' stores in Jersey and Guernsey. It was developed by a team in the Isle of Man and was trialed by convenience stores in Northern Ireland in 2019. According to statistics from Gander, 45% more reduced food is being sold because of the app.
Food waste is a significant problem in Jersey with the island throwing away around 14,000 tones of rubbish a year. The Co-founder of Gander says she is delighted to be partnering with SandpiperCi to roll out the app and help toward tackling food waste.
SandpiperCI say they believe the app will benefit customers through easier access to reduce food products.
The app can be downloaded via the Apple or Android stores.
