A government scrutiny panel in Jersey will probe the decision to split the Channel Islands Competition & Regulatory Authorities (CICRA) into two island-specific bodies.

Earlier this year, the island's Economic Development Minister Senator Lyndon Farnham announced that the competitions watchdog would be separated to allow it to better address issues specific to Jersey and Guernsey.

Now the Economic and International Affairs Scrutiny Panel has announced it will examine how and why that decision was made, as well as what the implications of it will be.

CICRA has been tasked with enforcing competition law across the islands since 2010, as well as regulating the prices of Jersey's ports and postal sectors as well as the telecoms sector in both islands.

The decision to de-merge the body was due to come into force on Wednesday 1 July.
