Guernsey's most senior politician has shared his personal experience of sexual assault to show islanders it can happen to anyone.

Gavin St Pier was speaking after his amendment passed to change the current burden of proof of consent from the victim to the perpetrator when cases come to court.

This amendment passed with majority support before the modernisation of Guernsey's Sexual Offence act was passed unanimously by the States.

Deputy St Pier says for over 30 years he has not spoken to anyone outside of his family about his experience of sexual assault but hopes people will know they are not alone.

It seems speaking out during the States debate has already resonated with many as the deputy's inbox brought tears to his eyes this morning.

Looking ahead the island's Chief Minister says Guernsey needs to provide better support for victims of sexual abuse.
