Jersey bans single-use plastic and paper bags
The sale of single-use carrier bags will be banned in Jersey from next year.
States Members have passed a proposition by St Helier Deputy, Inna Gardiner, to make the supply and distribution of plastic and paper bags by retailers to consumers, illegal.
A minimum price will also be set for ‘bags for life’ to ensure people are encouraged to reuse them.
A suggestion that any profits raised by retailers through the sale of bags for life should be donated to environmental charities was withdrawn.
Draft legislation will be brought forward by February 2021 and is expected to come into force six months later.
