Disposable barbecue plea after six fires in a week
Firefighters in Jersey have renewed their plea for islanders to take care when disposing of hot ash from barbecues.
Over the past week, the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service have tacked six bin fires, caused by people throwing away their grills before cooling them down properly.
Some of the bins have been close to businesses and homes, which firefighters say has the potential to put those inside in avoidable danger.
In a post on social media, which showed the melted remains of the large bins, it said they would like to remind islanders not to dispose of their barbecues unless they have been completely soaked and are cold.
To dispose safely of your barbecue:
Carefully use sand or water to cool the disposable barbecue.
Ensure it is soaked and cold.
Once extinguished, leave the barbecue to cool down completely.
Once cool, dispose of it safely in the bin.
