Guernsey's airport extension debate delayed
A debate on extending the runway at Guernsey airport will be delayed until at least the end of the year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Deputy Charles Parkinson announced a business case for extending the runway to at least 1700 metres has been completed.
But that the findings will need to be reviewed in light of the pandemic.
There needs to be an extra 8,200 visitors a year to make the investment worthwhile.
Over 40 years it could generate £21 million to the local economy.
In October 2019 seven Deputies put a new proposition to the States - hoping to secure a runway extension.
The Policy and Resources Committee had previously asked for no more time or money to be spent on extending the runway past its existing boundaries.
They had agreed it was not worth taking the risk spending the money without a more convincing business benefit.
The Deputies then asked the Economic Development Committee to build a business case for extending the runway.
They hope that by extending the runway it would attract larger aircraft to provide lower fares.
