More financial support could be offered to employers as changes to the family friendly employment law come into force.

The changes include giving all new parents the option to take 52 weeks of parental leave, with six weeks to be paid by the employer.

It also introduces workplace rights to breastfeed and requires employers to take reasonable steps to provide breastfeeding facilities.

The law was approved in October but is due to come into force on 28 June.

Changes had been met with some opposition saying it would have a negative impact on employers.

An extension to the benefit system was due to be introduced.

It would have seen more parental benefits for both parents, to reduce the cost to the employer.

But there have been delays to that system which has led to the announcement of a temporary subsidy scheme to help support employers with the costs of the changes.
