Cheers to Guernsey’s Bailiff for final weekend in the role

People in Guernsey are being invited to raise a glass to Bailiff Sir Richard Collas, as he retires after eight years of service.

Guernsey's Lieutenant-Governor will be leading a toast to Sir Richard in an online broadcast from Government House at 5:00pm.

The Bailiff serves in non-political matters and has leading judicial and civic duties.

It has been Sir Richard Collas’ responsibility to act as Guernsey's "leading citizen" - greeting dignitaries and members of the Royal Family.

Amongst other responsibilities the Bailiff has to maintain order in the States Assembly, similarly to the role of the Speaker in the UK’s House of Commons.

Guernsey's Chief Minister Deputy Gavin St Pier also raised a 'non-traditional' toast to Sir Richard on social media.

Last year it was announced that Her Majesty the Queen approved the appointment of Richard McMahon, the current Deputy Bailiff, as Guernsey’s new leader. He will be Guernsey’s 90th Bailiff.
