Guernsey’s medical director, Dr Peter Rabey, has commended the public health measures which have enabled the island to begin the lifting of lockdown restrictions .
However he admits there are things he would have done differently in the island's fight against coronavirus .
The mixing of so-called household bubbles began this weekend , and somerecreational activities were also permitted .
Dr. Peter Rabey admitted he is shocked at just how effective social distancing measures have turned out to be.
I had no idea that public health measures would be this effective. I’m delighted they are being and really pleased that the Guernsey public have engaged with that. When we saw the initial projections of how it was expected to affect the UK if we didn’t put public health measures in place they were frankly terrifying. The effect of the public health measures here has been absolutely fantastic. We’ve had 13 deaths – every one is a tragedy - but it could be so much worse
Guernsey’s medical director, Dr. Peter Rabey Even though many believe Guernsey has done well in its containment of coronavirus , Dr. Rabey admits there are things he would have done differently.
Nobody came into Covid with a manual saying this is how you deal with a Covid outbreak.I think we could do more to avoid the numbers we got in the care homes.
We were right up front about the care homes - that was where our front line was but you look back and you think somebody took it into a care home early in the crisis in Guernsey and could we have stopped that happening if we’d known how vicious it would be and could we have maybe stopped that earlier. It’s that sort of thing which you look back and think what if?
