Unemployment more than doubles in Jersey in a month

Unemployment in Jersey has more than doubled in April.

2,230 people are now registered as actively seeking work, compared to 960 a month earlier.

The job losses come as many businesses have been unable to continue normal operations during the coronavirus pandemic.

The construction industry has been hit the hardest, seeing the largest increase in people actively seeking work after many of Jersey’s construction sites were closed last month.

Cleaners, hospitality and retail and construction workers make up over half of those looking for employment.

Hundreds of others have started claiming Income Support, which is now being used to help over 11,000 islanders.
