Pembroke beach to be made more accessible

Guernsey's Pembroke slipway is being made more accessible.

Work has started on turning the steps into a concrete ramp to make it easier for some people with disabilities and pushchairs to access.

Pembroke beach is one of the few beaches on the island shallow enough to allow for beach wheelchairs. The specialised wheelchairs have balloon wheels that allow them to travel over rough terrain.

Improving the slipway will allow for more islanders to access the beach after lockdown restrictions end.

One charity is already fundraising to try and fund two extra specialised chairs. Guernsey Wooden Spoon is looking to raise £16,000 for the two chairs.

The new concrete ramp will be slightly ridged to reduce the risk of slipping.
