Herm bosses predict £2 million losses

Holidaymakers who were due to go to Herm will not be offered refunds, due to the predicted £2 million losses the islands expects to make.

Instead it is offering credit notes or re-booking holidays for a later date.

Management from the tourism group say Herm's insurers would not cover restrictions imposed by a global pandemic and so they could not claim.

The States of Guernsey have taken a similar stance, saying they do not expect to be providing assistance with refunds or ongoing loss of revenue because of Herm is closed.

On its Facebook page, Herm Island says they will start processing future bookings from visitors from Monday 4 May, however this will be subject to how long the island is closed for and what restrictions are in place affecting travel.

Since 23 March, no residents have left and no visitors have been to the island, and there have been no cases of Covid-19 on the island. The States of Guernsey has now given permission for residents there to resume some repairs and refurbishments, so long as they follow strict social distancing and hygiene measure.

The island's reservation team say they are contacting people via email with information on transferring their deposit for a later date or receiving a credit note. The team say people should expect delays as they try and work through the bookings and have thanked people for their patience.

Officials on the island say they are hoping to keep the 36 permanent staff in place throughout the lockdown and afterwards, which will allow holidays to continue to Herm. However they say holidays will not be the same to start with, as they would normally have over 100 seasonal staff helping run its tourism industry in the island.
