Jersey smacking ban comes into force today

From today (24 April), parents in Jersey will no longer be able to smack their children.

Last week, a landmark law change was officially registered, making Jersey the first place in the British Isles to ban the punishment.

The new law means children now have the same legal protection as adults from assault, so smacking, hitting or slapping a child is not allowed for any reason.

In 2019, Scotland became the first country in the UK to ban parents and carers from smacking children.

The Children’s Minister, Senator Sam Mézec said last week that he was ‘delighted’ that Jersey reached this ‘milestone’.

The Government launched a Stop Smacking campaign, which includes an island wide text message, to provide support for parents and make sure people are aware of the new change.
