Important bird pairs seen on Lihou island

Breeding pairs of ‘internationally important’ birds have been seen around Lihou island in Guernsey.

The island often sees nests of European shags, Lesser Black-baked gulls and Oystercatchers.

Many of these birds have been in decline due to human interference, rats and changing weather patterns, making them even more important to protect.

Whilst current coronavirus lockdown measures mean the island is seeing less visitors, the authorities have reminded people of the importance of protecting the site, even after these measures are lifted.

The island is also considered a Ramsar site, a wetland area considered to be of international importance.
