Call for live streaming of public court sessions in Jersey

Public court proceedings in Jersey could be streamed online for the duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deputy Montfort Tadier has lodged a proposition to the States Assembly, calling for all sessions which would normally have been heard in public to made available to watch online.

The proposition calls for live video-link equipment to be installed and operational in the courts by Sunday 31 May.

He argues that under the Human Rights (Jersey) Law 2000, which is a reflection of the European Convention of Human Rights legislation, everyone is entitled to a 'fair and public hearing'.

Deputy Tadier also points to the fact that meetings of the States Assembly have been live streamed on its website for the past four years.
