Pub landlord fined £6,000 for breaching lockdown closure laws

A pub landlord in Guernsey has been fined £6,000 by the Magistrates' Court for breaching lockdown rules.

The fine was an alternative to 300 days in prison.

Philip James Martel failed to comply with the emergency powers regulations brought in to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The Britannia in St Peter Port stayed open beyond 6:30pm on 20 March - the first night pub closures came into force.

Emergency power regulations came into force to close all establishments such as pubs and nightclubs that did not serve food.

On 21 March, Guernsey Police issued a statement warning people to avoid false commentary on social media saying:

Guernsey Police have today clarified that the video posted on social media referred 'to someone being arrested on the night for being disorderly.

The person who was fined was arrested at a later date.
