Jersey man 'astounded' at support from local community during pandemic

A Jerseyman says he has been "astounded" by the outpouring of support he has experienced during the coronavirus pandemic.

94-year-old Don Dolbel has lived alone since his wife passed away 19 years ago.

However, he says he has been boosted by letters sent to him from people across his parish wishing him well in these difficult times.

Don's neighbours have also been keeping an eye on him and are keen to make sure he has everything he needs - from friendship and support to meals and snacks.

There are concerns that many older people like Don may feel lonely and worried during the lockdown, as they are unable to see their friends or family.

The Silver Line was set up by celebrity journalist Esther Rantzen after it was piloted in Jersey. The free, 24-hour service offers information, friendship and advice to elderly people who need someone to talk to.

Dame Esther says they have seen a significant increase in calls since the pandemic began - but encourages islanders to keep calling.
