Channel Islands Co-op suspends double dividend offer - but frontline staff handed pay boost

The Channel Islands Co-operative Society is suspending its double dividend offer due to the coronavirus pandemic - but staff are set for a pay boost.

Normally, customers would be able to 'double their divi' if shopping in-store on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

However, the company says the scheme will stop until further notice as they do not want to encourage customers into stores on set days.

The company says with stores getting busier and work being done to enforce social distancing, the decision has also been made in order to relieve pressure on staff.

In place of the offer, the company will pay a 1% bonus from qualifying purchases, which will appear in customers' share accounts on 1 July.

The Co-op also confirmed that its staff would be receiving a pay boost in their May pay packet.

Those working in-store as well as staff from De Gruchy’s and Argent Funeral Care, Travelmaker, Co-operative Medical Care and Society pharmacies will see a 10% bonus on their salary.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Mark Cox says it is a reward for 'tireless hard work' as well as having to adapt to changing circumstances during the pandemic.
