First coronavirus death in Channel Islands

A patient has died in Jersey after testing positive for coronavirus.

Jersey's Health Minister said in a statement the patient, who was in their 80s, had underlying health conditions and was receiving end of life care.

Deputy Richard Renouf says whilst being treated for their illness and at the 'latter stages of their life' the patient contracted Covid-19 and died on Wednesday 25 March.

He confirmed the patient was in the care of Jersey's Health and Social Services.

In the Statement Deputy Renouf went on to address the 'significant amount of misinformation circulating' about the governments' response to coronavirus.

Deputy Renouf ends the statement by asking people not to speculate on social media, and warns in future 'we will have to report on more deaths.'
