Puffins spotted back in Alderney

Alderney Wildlife Trust are welcoming back the first sightings of puffins.

Photographer Joshua Copping spotted a small group flying around Burhou, the small island off the coast of Alderney, which is home to the largest population of Atlantic puffins in the Channel Islands.

The Trust are in the middle of installing a 'puffin cam' to keep an eye on the birds.

The Wildlife Trust has designated a 'Puffin Friendly Zone' around Burhou during the birds' breeding season after the puffin population declined in 2012.

This zone aims to provide a safe area to rest, undisturbed by visiting or passing boats as they can be easily unsettled when rafting on the water.

The Trust asks all mariners to help protect puffins by following this code of conduct. Credit: Alderney Wildlife Trust
