Guernsey States vote to 'pause and review' secondary education plans

Guernsey States have voted to halt the government's plans for secondary education on the island.

In a blow for the Committee for Education, Sport and Culture, deputies voted 18-17 in favour in support of the 'Determining The Best Model For Secondary Education requête which called for the government to 'pause and review' it's one-school, two-site model.

There was one abstention and three absentees.

The vote means the government cannot enter into any contractual obligations for the development of the new colleges and must produce a report before the end of the current States comparing the model with other alternatives.

It followed a guillotine motion called by Deputy Gavin St Pier, which ended the debate in the States Assembly and forced a vote on the issue.

Campaign group People Power Guernsey welcomed the news, saying it would support States Members who are prepared to explore other models of secondary education

With reaction to the 'pause and review' requête here is Serena Sandhu's interview with Education President Deputy Matt Fallaize.
