Jersey charities collaborate to provide water therapy for stroke survivors

Two Jersey charities have collaborated to provide rehabilitation services for stroke survivors.

Jersey Cheshire Home will lend the island's branch of the Stroke Association its pool to provide specialist aquatherapy group sessions.

The classes run once a week, over an eight week course, and are led by physiotherapist, Steve Martin, who will create a goal-led activity plan for each person.

There will be capacity for eight people in each session which will take place at the Eric Young House, where its purpose-built pool is maintained at a temperature of 35°C and has easy access for users with limited mobility.

Jersey Cheshire Home's General Manager says "the aim of the sessions is to provide rehabilitation for stroke survivors and enable them to live as independently as possible".

The organisation says it is helping to reduce the need for repeat hospitalisation.

The Jersey branch of the Stroke Association says it is seeing referrals increase by around 30% each year.

The cost of the classes has been covered by local businesses and fundraisers.
