GCSE education in Guernsey is a 'postcode lottery' according to Committee

Guernsey's Education President says the island's GCSE system is a "postcode lottery" and equality between schools can only be improved if the States 'press ahead with the two 11-18 colleges.'

The Committee for Education says inequality of opportunity in GCSE's and other Key Stage 4 qualifications varies widely across the current four school sites.

It attributes this imbalance to the former selective education system as well as trying to maintain the current schools.

The Committee has issued a list of school subjects which are taught in some schools but not in others. Those include:

  • At La Mare de Carteret and Les Beaucamps, French is the only language offered at GCSE.

  • GCSE's in Spanish and Psychology are now only available at the Grammar School.

  • GCSE Computer Science is studied at the Grammar School and St Sampson's, but in one year group only at Les Beaucamps and not at the La Mare site.

The Committee also says there are large differences in the course combinations that students can study across the island.
