Drug smuggler convicted in Jersey has affair with prison officer
A drug smuggler who was arrested in Jersey has been found having an affair with one of his prison officers.
Curtis Warren was jailed for 13 years in 2009 for plotting to smuggle cannabis into the island with a street value of £1 million.
The criminal, who was once named in the Sunday Times Rich List, has had a sexual relationship with 40-year-old Stephanie Smithwhite, an officer at HMP Frankland near Durham.
She has appeared before Durham Crown Court to admit two counts of misconduct; one for the relationship with Warren, the second for knowing he had a mobile phone in prison.
57-year-old Warren from Liverpool became an international drug trafficker in the 1990s, and was one of Britain's most wanted men.
From 1997 until 2007, he was locked up in The Netherlands' highest security jail after conspiring to import £100m worth of drugs and weapons.
He was then convicted of the manslaughter of one of his prison inmates.
Stephanie Smithwhite from South Tyneside, is due to be sentenced on 7 February.
