Deputy calls for a review of taxi sector to tackle illegal lifts
The only way to stop people giving illegal lifts for money is to change Jersey's taxi industry, according to a St Lawrence Deputy.
Deputy Kirsten Morel says the popularity of the Facebook page 'Jersey Lifts' suggests the current taxi service on the island does not meet demand.
The Facebook page connects people willing to offer lifts to those who want them. Ride sharing is legal as long as the driver does not make a profit.
Deputy Morel says a complete review of the taxi sector is needed to make sure it is working the best way it can for the island.
Deputy Morel says cost may be one of the reasons people turn to lift sharing services, but he believes there are also not enough taxis available at peak times.
