Channel Islands mark 75 years since arrival of SS Vega
Guernsey has marked the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the SS Vega.
The ship docked in Guernsey on December 27 1944 to hand food parcels to islanders who were starving during the occupation, before arriving in Jersey a few days later.
The Swedish steam ship, chartered by the Red Cross, made several trips between Lisbon and the Channel Islands between 1944 and 1945 when the islands were liberated.
The UK government had been reluctant to send food parcels to the islands out of fear of sustaining the occupying German forces.
Those who had not evacuated the islands at the beginning of the occupation faced a great deal of hardship and many islanders lost their lives as food supplies ran out - something Richard Richard Heaume understands all too well.
