New light for Jersey's La Corbière lighthouse
La Corbière lighthouse has a new LED light system replacing its old conventional incandescent lamp.
The LED lamp was installed after a survey of the lighthouse showed the mercury that helped the old lantern rotate could be a health hazard.
The lighthouse, built in 1874, originally used a wick burning oil lamp. After 145 years and various changes Corbière has received its latest revamp.
La Corbière lighthouse timeline:
1874: La Corbière lighthouse built
1933: Clockwork mechanisms installed
1965: The lighthouse converted to mains electric
1974: The light became fully autonomous
The new LED lamp was installed by UK company Sealite UK who assisted in keeping the lighthouse fully operational throughout the work.
Standing at 10 metres tall it was the world's first concrete lighthouse. Most recently it has starred in an advert with comedian Jack Whitehall and his dad.
