Calls for change to 'outdated' surrogacy laws in Jersey

A woman who has been a surrogate mother four times, is calling for urgent change to what she calls "outdated" Jersey surrogacy laws.

Karina Ward says it is 'bizarre' that the intended parents have to wait six weeks before starting the legal process to be recognised on their child's birth certificate.

Jersey's current law, which follows UK legislation, states that the woman who gives birth has the right to keep the child - even if she is not the genetic parent.

The parents then have to apply for a "parental order" from the courts - which they cannot do until six weeks after birth.
