West claims maiden Jersey Rally title in 'horrendous' conditions

UK driver Chris West won the 2019 Jersey Rally alongside local navigator Robbie Hannah to claim his maiden title.

They finished just 43 seconds clear of last year's winners Ross Le Noa and Domonic Volante after two days of racing in extremely challenging conditions.

The duo - in their Peugeot 306 Maxi - are the first to win the event in a front-wheel drive car for many years.

The UK team of Mark Kelly and Neil Colman rounded off the podium in third with 45 of the 78 starters completing the 28 stages.

Saturday's Trophy Rally - for cars which do not make it through the first day - was won by the Channel Islands pair of Jersey driver Ed Fossey and Guernsey navigator Will Rutherford.

Craig Robert and Karl Marshall were the top all-Guernsey team in 19th, while Jersey's Jeremy Baudains - champion in 1992 - was fourth on his 30th consecutive year competing in the rally.

There were several significant crashes over the weekend as crews battled wet and misty weather, and slippery conditions on the road.

More than 500 volunteers came together to put on the event, which is now in its 37th year.
