Guernsey underwater cable assembled

A new undersea electricity cable has been assembled and will soon be on its way to the Channel Islands.

The wire is just over 37 kilometres long and will connect Guernsey to France via Jersey.

At the moment, Guernsey is relying on power being generated on-island, as the existing cable is working at "significantly reduced capacity".

The aim is to return the island to importing low-carbon electricity by the end of the year.

Underwater research has been done to ensure minimum disruption will be made to the sea bed.

Environmental surveys have also been carried out, and marine users are being made of aware of the activity taking place.
