Guernsey's 2019 Battle of Flowers is underway.

Following the opening of this year's North Show, visitors will take to the fields Saumarez Park for the annual carnival of colour which celebrates Guernsey's agricultural and horticultural heritage.

Islanders will also showcase their home-made floral floats in the arena, in the hope of taking home the coveted 'Prix d’honneur' prize.

Alongside the judging of the floats, there will also be a funfair, stalls and refreshments and a variety of entertainment from both local and off-island talent.

Until the 1960s, competitors would strip the flowers down from the floats and throw them at one another.

In more recent times though, the floats live to make their way through the crowds in an illuminated parade before a firework display brings down the curtain on the event.
