Liberation Square, the Weighbridge and the Steam Clock could still be merged under proposals put forward by Jersey's government.

A trial to close the road between Liberation Square and the Weighbridge was postponed in April. This was after the Infrastructure Minister said it would not accurately show the impact on traffic, due to bank holidays and school closures.

However, development of the area could become a priority again if it is supported by the public.

The government is proposing to unify the areas into a single space to host cultural and social events throughout the year.

They say this can be achieved by improving the crossing on La Rue de La Liberation and by giving pedestrians and cyclists greater priority.

The plans also suggest making the Esplanade pedestrians-only, except for buses or during road closures on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

In all, the government's new Southwest St Helier Planning Framework aims to develop ten zones within town.

The Framework says that any redevelopment at the Waterfront should not provide a hard visual barrier to the natural beauty of the island, as some of the current buildings do.

The government is asking people to give their views on the proposals, which they say will complement rather than override the Island Plan, which is also under review.

Jersey's Environment Minister says he will the views and opinions of islanders before adopting the framework as planning guidance.

The full consultation documents for potential redevelopment of town can be found on the government's website.
