Lord Eric Pickles has been visiting World War Two sites in Alderney this week.

On Friday he toured the island's Longis Common, Lager Sylt, the Hammond Memorial and Alderney Museum. Lord Pickles met with politicians and Dr Gilly Carr, who is the Channel Island representative in the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, and spent the day in Guernsey beforehand.

The Conservative Party member was appointed Special Envoy for Post-Holocaust issues in September 2015 and works closely with Holocaust survivors and academics.

Alderney's war history has been making national headlines this summer. Last month a new documentary found the prisoner of war death toll to be almost double that originally thought in the island.
