A Guernseyman is urging the islands government to support a compensation scheme for islanders affected by asbestos related cancer.

Ian Goodwin has mesothelioma, a disease caused from inhaling asbestos fibres.

He said he was was exposed to the material when he worked as a mechanic and then at Le Riches.

Mr Goodwin is starting a support group for other islanders with the disease and hopes this will encourage the government to start a compensation scheme.

Last year, Jersey States voted to provide compensation for mesothelioma sufferers who were exposed to asbestos.

The disease is thought to kill three people a year in Jersey.
