Jersey's government is set to announce a date for a ban on new diesel and petrol vehicles, ITV News can reveal.

The date of 2039 is being considered by policymakers to ensure such vehicles are outlawed ahead of a similar ban in France and the UK in 2040.

They are concerned to do otherwise would result in the island being flooded by second hand vehicles from both countries.

It comes as the National Trust for Jersey are calling on the government to formally announce a date by which all vehicles would be "ultra low emission vehicles" - such as electric cars.

Jersey's parliament declared a 'climate emergency' a few weeks ago and pledged to make the island carbon neutral by the year 2030.

Today, the government did not officially confirm the new date for banning petrol and diesel vehicles, but the Infrastructure Minister dropped a heavy hint of ministers' intentions.

A formal announcement of the 2039 ban date is not expected to be made for a number of months.

The government says it hopes market forces, including a shift by motor manufacturers away from petrol and diesel in favour of electric, will mean people will make the change themselves regardless of any firm deadline.
