Man from Jersey who struggled with prostate cancer urges others to get support
A Jersey man is urging others who have been affected by prostate cancer to make sure they are getting the support they need.
Around 89 men in Jersey are diagnosed with the disease each year. It is the second most common cause of death from cancer in the island.
David Butel says his life was turned upside down in April 2013 following an abnormal PSA test, which is a blood test used to check for the disease.
He had an operation to remove his prostate, but ten days after the procedure David was told the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes.
His condition is not curable and he takes hormone suppressing drugs to prevent the cancer from spreading further.
David found it difficult to come to terms with the diagnosis.
David joined the Macmillan Prostate Cancer support group. He says it is the best decision he has made.
He now volunteers with the Macmillan team and wants people to know that taking the first step to getting the right help is important.
As part of prostate cancer awareness month the group is holding its own special week.
Anyone with questions can find volunteers in various locations from Tuesday-Friday.
