Women Guernsey and Alderney are being reminded of the programmes on offer to try and prevent cervical cancer.

It comes as part of the national Cervical Cancer Prevention Week which runs from the 21st- 27th January.

Throughout the week, the Health and Social Care department are reminding women that they are able to receive the HPV vaccination, free cervical screening and a programme for the treatment of pre-cancerous lesions.

The Director of Public Health has said that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer.

HSC are also asking people to encourage girls to take up the HPV vaccination which is offered free of charge to Year 8 and 9 pupils as well as attend a cervical screening when invited.

They are also trying to make sure women know what the symptoms of cervical cancer are and to seek medical advice if experiencing any of these symptoms.

Each year in Guernsey and Alderney, approximately 5 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed with approximately 1-2 deaths from cervical cancer recorded per year.

For more information on cervical screening people are being asked to get in touch with Emily Davies, Public Health Practitioner on 01481 707 311 or by e-mail at Emily.Davies@gov.gg.
