Reds receive States backing to see out season

Jersey Reds will get £150,000 from the States to support them during the current season.

The club's board say, despite gate receipts and sponsorship, they face an annual operating deficit of double that amount but are hopeful of finding a long-term solution.

Further money from the island's government will also fund a review into sustainable sports facilities, of which professional rugby will form a part.

Jersey Reds' chairman, Mark Morgan, said the move is also recognition of the significant contribution the club makes to the island's economy.

They are the only professional team in the Channel Islands, employing a full-time squad of players and coaches, and currently sit third in the Championship.

Earlier this year, the Reds bought back assets, including the main pitch at St Peter, which were sold to keep the club going in November 2016.
