Fire confirmed at Guernsey metal scrapyard
A large fire is now under control at Guernsey Metals, a scrapyard in St Sampsons.
The owner of Guernsey Metals suspect the cause of the fire may have been a battery left in one of the cars they de-fuel before they scrap them.
People who live nearby are being advised to stay inside their houses and to close windows and doors by the Environmental Health department.
Previously Guernsey's Emergency Services had said the 'outside fire' was at the recycling plant.
However, four fire engines were called to Guernsey Metals.
Bulwer Avenue is still closed in both directions. The Fire Service is asking people to avoid the area.
Traffic travelling northbound is being redirected down Les Grandes Maisons Road. Southbound traffic from The Bridge is being diverted along Nocq Road and Saltpans Road.
The Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Longue Hougue has been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.
