Lee Durrell is now an Honorary Citizen of Corfu, the Greek island where her husband Gerald Durrell lived with his family between 1935-1939.

Lee, who is the Honorary Director of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, revealed the news and described the island as a "magical" place.

Corfu holds important historical significance for the Durrell family.

Gerald Durrell's well known book "My Family and Other Animals" humorously retells the stories of his childhood and growing up on the island.

The book also shows his early love for the animals and nature around him.

In turn, the island also fondly remembers the Durrells.

There is also a plaque of Gerald Durrell's face in the garden, which is similar to the statue seen at Jersey Zoo.

The feature is named after the title of Durrell's third book about his time in the Greek island, "Corfu the Garden of the Gods".
